Aldeburgh DocFest introduction (2011)

The 17th ALDEBURGH DOCFEST 2011 is a showcase for new and established documentary films. This year we are proud to introduce a range of ambitious innovations. We will be bringing international film-makers to Aldeburgh to engage in conversation about their work with audience Q & A sessions; there will be a new screening gallery upstairs at the Cinema with extended viewings of the work of our featured film-makers; for the first time we will mount a series of inter-active events at Walberswick Anchor Screening Barn to complement the main Aldeburgh DocFest and appeal to our younger audiences, including a Poetry Slam; a full day documentary masterclass led by an internationally acclaimed film-maker in association with the National Film & Television School and the University of East Anglia; and a look at the role of animation in documentary films. As a finale in Aldeburgh we are mounting a controversial debate on the future of the press – pulling together some major figures at a historic moment when the survival of many newspapers and indeed of journalistic freedom is in jeopardy.
Our aim – building on last year’s strand of encouraging new talent – is to entertain you and challenge you, constantly expanding the repertoire of events, identifying cutting edge film-makers from many different cultures. And we have a few surprises in store, all designed to help build a centre of excellence in the arts on the beautiful Suffolk coast.
