MRS CAREY’S CONCERT
COMING OF AGE
Saturday 12th November 6.00pm
7.45pm – A musical interlude with Emily Sun, one of the film’s young stars
8.15pm – Sophie Raymond in Conversation
MRS CAREY’S CONCERT follows an Australian music teacher with an obsession: she wants her girls to give a top-flight concert at the Sydney Opera House. It is Sophie Raymond’s debut feature length documentary, and builds on her successful career as an animator and singer/songwriter with academic foundations in anthropology & theatre. The film won several awards and an Australian theatrical release, where it grossed the 2nd highest documentary box office returns in Australian history, with over 60 festival screenings worldwide. Sophie teamed up with veteran film-maker Bob Connolly, co-director of MRS CAREY’S CONCERT, after a chance meeting at IDFA in 2003 (the Dutch International DocFest), where she was presenting a short animated doco IT’S LIKE THAT. As a singer/songwriter Sophie released and toured three albums of her own work, and presented a regular segment on ABC National Radio, thus bringing a wealth of hands-on experience to her role as sound recordist, editor and co-director of MRS CAREY’S CONCERT.
Animator, musician, sound recordist, director and editor: for most people, to excel at just one of those talents is a lifetime’s work. Sophie Raymond has got the complete package. Can this be the way forward for documentarians in a dramatically changing industry?
