SHANTYTOWN SHAKESPEARE tells the story of how an English theatre director, Paul Heritage, persuaded the beloved Brazilian stars of the wildly popular soap-operas to take to the stage in the killing ground between two warring favelas in Rio de Janeiro. For a week in June 2007, the drug traffickers declared a silent cease-fire to allow preparations for a single performance of Antony and Cleopatra which launched a three-month project that crossed this divided city.
